WORKS UNDERWAY AT BENDIGO BLACK SPOT PROJECT

23 June 2025

Works are underway to improve the safety of a dangerous Bendigo intersection, thanks to funding delivered via the Federal Labor Government’s 2024-25 Black Spot Program.

The project will receive $336,000 to deliver safety improvements to the intersection of Lily Street and Marong Road in Ironbark.

Delivered by the Department of Transport and Planning, the improvements include extending the kerbing at the entrance of the shopping complex, the removal of a tree near the entrance of the shopping complex and the implementation of new line marking, signs and drainage.

This will help improve driver visibility and make it easier for visitors enter and exit the shopping complex near Lily Street.

The Black Spot Program identifies dangerous road locations where crashes are occurring or are at risk of occurring and provides funding for a range of safety measures, including raised crossings, speed humps and improved kerbing.

The Federal Labor Government has substantially increased Black Spot Program funding, which is progressively rising from $110 million to $150 million per year.

This investment is part of the Labor Government’s response to the worsening road toll, which includes progressively doubling Roads to Recovery funding from $500 million to $1 billion a year.

More information on the Black Spot Program, including a full list of projects recently announced in Queensland, Western Australia and Victoria is available here.

QUOTES ATTRIBUTABLE TO FEDERAL MEMBER FOR BENDIGO, LISA CHESTERS MP:

“Marong Road is a busy arterial and this intersection regularly has cars entering and exiting the busy shopping complex off Marong Road.

“I know from talking to locals how dangerous this section of Marong Road is and the concerns that they have had about the potential of a major accident occurring.

“These improvements will make local shoppers and everyday road users safer and reduce the risk of collisions.

“This is just one of the many road projects our government is funding to improve the safety and useability of roads in the Bendigo electorate.”
